A few years ago, I had an opportunity to work on a great film set in Arizona. It was a lower-budget film, but it was still an exciting, and exhilarating experience for me. It’s always amazing to see how everyone works in sync on the set, doing their jobs like a well-oiled machine. And, at the end of every day, though exhausted and spent, it’s like a family around the dinner table.
I wish I had become a part of the film industry at a younger age. Back then, it seemed like it was something so far from my reach I never imagined I would, or could, pursue it. But, after writing a feature film screenplay and moving to Los Angeles for a couple years, I realized it truly is something I want to do, and more importantly, something I can do.
My screenplay is a Native American story so it’s vital to bring opportunity to Indigenous people through the project. Because tribal characters of history and stories are sacred, they need to be told in a respectful and authentic way. This is why Vision Quest Interns, in conjunction with the Sacajawea, The Windcatcher production, is developing an Indigenous program for Native young people. It will help them acquire the tools they need, directly from professionals, to tell their stories vividly and creatively – for there is so much wisdom to be shared.
In addition, we are planning many projects that will be open to all young people, ages 18-27, through the Vision Quest Interns program. Being on set, in the midst of the action, first-hand, is invaluable for anyone who is serious about a film career. Our internship program allows interns to select the positions of interest, and learn from industry professionals.
